Breuer, Goldfinger and Other Magyars

Brutalist Architecture in and out of Hungary

Walter Rózsi Villa

Hours
Wed-Sun 10 am-6 pm

The exhibition Breuer, Goldfinger and Other Magyars – Brutalist Architecture in and out of Hungary explores the impact of Brutalism in Hungary, one of the most controversial yet increasingly appreciated trends in late modern architecture.

Based on original research conducted by the HMA MPDC, the exhibition maps Hungarian Brutalist architecture while also exploring its wider international context through the work and influence of Marcel Breuer and Ernő Goldfinger. Between 2024 and 2025, more than 120 buildings were photographed and documented through extensive fieldwork, complemented by archival research, literature review and interviews. The results are presented through photographs, drawings and models created especially for the exhibition.

Alongside the main exhibition, a selection from the museum's Breuer Collection is presented as a separate unit. Acquired in 2025 and on public display for the first time, the collection includes furniture, books, models and photographs documenting Marcel Breuer's former summer home in Wellfleet, as well as some of his most significant architectural works. This acquisition established the museum's Breuer Collection as the leading collection of Marcel Breuer–related material in Hungary and the wider region.
