Peter Hellweger

The exhibition presents the drawings of Styrian architect Peter Hellweger (1941–2011) and explores architectural drawing as a tool for analysis, argumentation, and design.

Styrian architect Peter Hellweger (1941–2011) used architectural drawings as tools for thinking, to question the world and to design in dialogue with it. His architectural drawings enable Hellweger, as the central means of expression in his designs, to define the architectural mode of “thinking through building”: a visual understanding of the existing that directly gives space to the world of the imagination and its projections. Analysis, argument, and design are inseparable in his work; for him, they constitute merely different levels of the same reflexive practices in architectural drawing.

The exhibition invites visitors to perceive architectural drawings as forms of thought. On display are projects from Hellweger’s time as a student at Graz University of Technology, as well as works from his collaboration with Günther Domenig’s architectural firm, and plans, sketches, and collages from his independent architectural practice.
