The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning is the higher authority responsible for federal construction in the area of responsibility of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building. It is organised into a construction and a research division.

The main task of the BBR’s construction divisions is to oversee the Federal Republic of Germany’s construction projects in Berlin, Bonn and abroad. This includes new buildings and extensions, as well as maintenance projects of all sizes. The tasks range from highly complex new laboratory buildings to administration buildings with challenging security facilities and visitor centres to the restoration of important cultural buildings.

Projects for the German Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the Office of the Federal President are part of the portfolio, as are buildings for the Federal Chancellery and numerous federal ministries and subordinate authorities. In Berlin, the BBR also supervises construction measures for the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, SPK), while construction abroad includes German embassies as well as federal cultural and research facilities around the world.

For new building projects, the BBR conducts the architectural and art in architecture competitions. It also takes the responsibility for the awarding and contract processes for the projects. The competition procedures for the German Architecture Award and other important prizes are also conducted by the BBR.

The BBR’s research department is organised in the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). Please visit www.bbsr.bund.de for further information on the BBSR.
