Housing and in particular affordable housing is the defining issue of our time. Successive governments have failed to tackle this issue and cash-strapped local authorities appear to lack either the political will or the financial capacity to address this crucial issue. The Coalition Government’s planning policies of deregulation and devolved powers did not kick start housing delivery as expected. Against this backdrop and with a focus on what is happening in the Bristol City Council area and beyond, the Architecture Centre invited UWE Architecture & Planning students to report on conventional and alternative methods of delivering housing since Bristol City Council’s adoption of its Core Strategy in 2011.

This exhibition presents a map of housing delivery at different scales across the city alongside a series of case studies of recent housing developments with a focus on affordable housing provision in the city. Housing delivery is now provided by many different methods and agencies in Bristol and it could be the model for housing across the country.
