At this moment, 80 architects and planners in offices located in Rotterdam and Shanghai, are dealing with the world of tomorrow. Architecture and urban planning are disciplines of the future, a future that is being formed and shaped now. In order to give content to those visions, MVRDV and the University of Delft have established The Why Factory, a research institute where, among other things, the consequences of the decisions are being explored and visualised.

The readers of Living Architecture have chosen MVRDV as architect of the year 2012 and therefore have been invited to make a small retrospective exhibition. A review is rat her paradoxical for daily practice. This self-analysis is an evaluation of the last 22 years through the use of a simple timeline, accompanied by quotes from the press and only a few exceptions of texts by MVRDV themselves, ones of which marked with the logo.

The timeline follows the workflow of the projects and not their completion. Thus, the projects that have been worked on at the same time, are side by side on the panels. The many photos of the completed projects all together, give the impression of a magazine or a huge advertisement and therefore a light box presentation format was chosen.
