ISSSresearch&architecture – Independent Structure for Sustainable Space research – is a research and architecture studio founded and directed by the architects Ingrid Sabatier (France) and Stephan Schwarz (Austria). Influenced by Situationist International urban practice and critical spatial theory, the research of ISSS is dealing with architecture, contemporary urban dynamics and the role and power of people’s engagement within the production of their urban space towards a sustainable urban future considering social, economical, ecological and cultural aspects. This constantly on-going research is the intellectual background of the studio’s architectural practice, which never starts from a blank sheet of paper but always takes the specific multi-layered context into consideration, in order to develop holistic concepts for any spatial, typological and programmatic tasks. Permanently linking research and the practice on the ground ISSS key competences are architecture and urbanism as well as participatory design processes in order to develop research-based sustainable spatial solutions at all scales.
