The presentation of the DAM Preis 2019 highlights current architecture from Germany and remarkable projects by German architecture firms outside the country. A jury selected for the exhibition 22 building ensembles and three examples from abroad from a longlist of 100 buildings completed between fall 2016 and spring 2018. The exhibition offers an opportunity to discover the sheer diversity of current architecture in Germany, and includes buildings in rural areas as well as in small towns and conurbations. Examples of apartment complexes are presented, along with new libraries as non-commercial, inner-city centers, a museum, and an opera house – but also technical buildings like a road salt storage facility. Eye-catching, standalone buildings are included, most significantly a whole series of impressive examples of how architects have approached a conceptually planned modernization and an enhancement of an existing building. Equally striking is the hybrid concept behind some buildings which, from the outset, were developed to fulfil multiple functions.

The jury nominated four of the buildings as finalists for the DAM Preis 2019, then inspected the buildings themselves and ultimately chose the winning project: The reconstruction and renovation of the Kulturpalast Dresden by gmp – Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner will be presented in the centre of the exhibition. In 2019, the prize will be awarded by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) for the third time in close cooperation with our partner JUNG.

Parallel to the exhibition opening, DOM publishers, Berlin, will bring out the German Architecture Annual 2019. Renowned authors have written articles for it exploring the prize-winning project, the shortlisted finalists and buildings as well as the buildings outside Germany. This is complimented by two essays on current topics, the new old town in Frankfurt and the new generation of highrises in Singapore. The German Architecture Annual 2019 can be obtained from bookstores or from the DAM ticket office. Members of the Society of Friends of the DAM receive the annual free of charge at the DAM ticket office.
