From December 1, 2020 to March 1, 2021, the ABC will be showing presentations by three design teams for the 'Waddenbuurt' in Schalkwijk in Haarlem. The teams took part in a competition organized by government architect Floris Alkemade, among others. The challenge was to improve the living environment of a number of characteristic '1960s districts and neighborhoods'. The competition for the Schalkwijk location was co-organized by the Municipality of Haarlem and the Pré Wonen housing corporation.

At the end of 2018, under the title Panorama Lokaal, at the initiative of Chief Government Architect Floris Alkemade (council of government advisers), a design competition was held for creative multidisciplinary teams on the question: How do we prepare the city fringes for the future?

Following the call to municipalities and housing corporations / residents to ask which city fringes deserve a makeover, seven city fringes were chosen. Those seven were: Bargeres in Emmen, Julianadorp in the municipality of Den Helder, Rotterdam Beverwaard, Tilburg Noord, Westwijk in Vlaardingen, Mosterdhof in Westervoort and Haarlem Schalkwijk.

Three teams were then selected per location to work on design proposals that are innovative, feasible and feasible. The proposals also had to serve as inspiration for other locations. In September, the winning teams and their designs were announced by a professional jury.
