MUNICH
The exhibition “MÜNCHEN. Photographs by Rainer Viertlböck 2009–2025” is being presented to mark the expanded new edition of the book of the same name, published by Schirmer/Mosel Verlag, and takes place as part of the mcbw.
Rainer Viertlböck’s works depict Munich from unusual perspectives. The photographer turns his gaze toward a city that is supposedly familiar, rendering its spatial and visual structure legible in a new way. Through shots taken from elevated positions—from lifting platforms, by helicopter, or with a drone—images emerge that transform familiar places into a different perception. Architectural details, urban spatial relationships, and often overlooked surfaces come to the fore.
Viertlböck, born in Munich, returned to his hometown after several years of working internationally and began work on this series in 2009. The exhibition brings together a selection from the ongoing project and corresponds with the newly expanded edition of the book, first published in 2015.
