How does it feel to live and work in monuments of modernism? What makes living in the Hansaviertel neighbourhood or in Karl-Marx-Allee so special? Why are both areas representative of once-divided, now-united Berlin? For photographer Bettina Cohnen, these questions serve as the foundation of her portraits of the residents and their flats.

She looks beyond the pure image. Living in a Monument combines architectural exchange with a cross-district requirement: We show portraits from the Hansaviertel in the Haus des Lehrers (Teachers’ House) on Alexanderplatz, while in turn, people photographed in Karl-Marx-Allee are presented in the Hansabibliothek. Monuments and people in both East and West are interwoven. The double exhibition, curated and produced by thelink.berlin, is part of the program of the 2022 Triennale of Modernism, the nationwide architectural festival dedicated to visions of German architectural modernism.
