The Swiss Museum of Transport Foundation has set itself the goal of preserving, caring for and maintaining the collection of objects relating to the Swiss transport system. The collection is made accessible to the public as part of the museum's operations and the museum's educational service. The documentation center supports exhibition activities and scientific research. Its archive includes text, image, plan and sound documents on the history of transport.

The Swiss Museum of Transport was opened on July 1, 1959 after two years of construction and quickly became the most visited museum in Switzerland. In 1969, the first and to this day the only large planetarium in Switzerland, as well as the restaurant and the office building, were added. Since 1972, the Aerospace Hall has complemented the ensemble of exhibition halls. Between 1979 and 1985 the Hans Erni Museum, the second hall for rail traffic with the cover of the former open-air rail area and the shipping, cable car and tourism hall were built. In 1996 a further expansion was completed with the integration of the film theatre. For the 50th anniversary in 2009, the iconic Road Traffic Hall and the redesign of the entrance area with a conference center, restaurant and shop were added. The Swiss Chocolate Adventure (2014) and the Media World (2016) complement the comprehensive offer of the Swiss Museum of Transport.
