«A SCHOOL OF COMMONS: a European partnership between schools of architecture, collectives of architects and local associations»

“Common” third-places and citizens, a change in the professions of urban and architectural production, the evolution of teaching practices in the training courses of future architects, urban planners, landscape architects: these are the premises of the European project A school of commons , initiated by the Collective Etc.

Supported by the Erasmus + program, the project aims to develop a European network of educational, scientific and professional practices around the enhancement of vacant heritage in rural areas, citizen participation and the regeneration of local dynamics (social, economic, cultural).

The project takes place in three European countries (France, Italy, Greece), from 2021 to 2024, and brings together third-place projects carried out by local communities, a generation of young professionals involved and organized in collectives of architects and architecture schools.
A school of commons is an opportunity to integrate pedagogies outside the walls into the curricula of schools of architecture and to train future architects as closely as possible to contemporary social and ecological questions. The project is based on the organization of intensive learning-by-doing workshops, which involve all partners in the activation and transformation of disused buildings, thus supporting citizen initiatives in rural areas.

The project, spread over three years, will also make it possible to question the evolution of the profession and the processes of architecture and urban planning.

The exhibition at the Maison de l'Architecture de l'Isère recounts the A school of commons project in a scenography that presents the approach, the actors and the places involved, and illustrates the dynamics of actions for a more militant and initiating architecture. of change, social and environmental professionals by the act of dealing with it.
