On July 27, 2017 the Artists’ Colony Museum will open its doors for part one of the new presentation of the permanent collection.
In the exhibition, visitors will be able to view the exceptional work of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony from 1901 to 1914 and beyond, no longer in chronological order, but arranged according to thematic focuses.
“SPATIAL ART – Made in Darmstadt” focuses on the idea of the Artists’ Colony members to achieve, with every single design project, a symbiosis of art and everyday life. Each individual object was not only meant to be aesthetically designed, but was also to have a role in an intricate interplay of colors and shapes, thus, giving form to a room ensemble designed in its entirety as a Gesamtkunstwerk. This pioneering principle, according to which works of art and furniture were shown in coherently designed living spaces, will be illustrated in the new presentation of the collection with various examples.
More than 150 pieces of furniture, room ensembles, ceramics, books, textiles, sculptures, models, paintings, prints and drawings by, among others, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens, Hans Christiansen and Albin Müller will be on display.
