Оn Wednesday, December 19, the Schusev Museum of Architecture will open its new exhibition NER: Tracing the Future City, 1959–1977. The exhibition is dedicated to the collective project of the Soviet experimental architectural group NER and its radical model of the City of the Future – «The New Element of Settlement».

At the core of NER’s City of the Future were humanistic conceptions about the urban environment. The authors rejected the uncontrolled urban growth, promoting a unified system of settlement across the country and a city as a space of creative communication between people. This urban model eventually became firmly established within the practice of urban planning. The exhibition will introduce the stages of the formation of NER’s urban theory – from their collective diploma at the Moscow Architectural Institute (1960) to projects published abroad and presented at the international exhibitions, such as XIV Milan Triennale (1968) and Osaka Expo’70. The «Ruina» annex will feature the previously unpublished materials from the personal archives of the NER group, original drawings and sketches, publications, as well as video and audio testimonies of the group members. The exhibition is accompanied by a large-scale cultural and educational program.
