The Glasgow Institute of Architects as trustees for the Alexander Thomson Scholarship invited entries for an A5 sized drawing on the theme of ‘detail’ from students of architecture and architects under 30. Over 70 entries were received – all of which are now on display at the A&DS Noticed Board on Level 2 of the Lighthouse in Glasgow along with a brief history of the scholarship.
The Alexander Thomson Scholarship was established upon his death in 1875 “for the purpose of providing a travelling studentship for the furtherance of the study of ancient classic architecture”. In 1890 the winner was a 22 year old architecture student called Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who used his scholarship on a sketching tour of Europe.
