About Othmar Barth and Leopold Gerstel
The work of the Italian architect Othmar Barth (1927–2010) is considered groundbreaking for the development of modern architecture in South Tyrol. In addition to the buildings he primarily realized in his homeland, Barth designed the Stams Ski Academy in the late 1970s, a key example of modern architecture in Tyrol. During his 18 years of teaching at the University of Innsbruck, he also influenced an entire generation of students and future architects in Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and South Tyrol.
The exhibition at the aut, conceived by Rainer Köberl in collaboration with photographer and filmmaker Lukas Schaller, consists of film documentaries of fifteen of Othmar Barth's buildings that still stand today, supplemented by plans and background information. Simultaneously, an exhibition at the Archive for Architecture, Art, and History offers insights into essential, timeless texts by Othmar Barth and Leopold Gerstel (1925–2010), who was also an influential professor of architecture in Innsbruck. Film documents from the ORF archive, in which the two architects have their say, complement and link the two exhibitions.
