Mindset Los Angeles

With Mindset Los Angeles – Frank Gehry and the Cool School, the Marta Herford takes a look at the early career of visionary architect Frank Gehry in the vibrant Los Angeles of the 1950s and 60s.

The exhibition, developed in close collaboration with Gehry Partners and the Getty Research Institute, presents Gehry’s early projects in dialogue with the artistic works of his contemporaries for the first time. Around 130 works by the American postwar avant-garde and movements typical of L.A., such as Light and Space, as well as numerous project sketches and designs by Frank Gehry, reflect the situation in Los Angeles at the time, telling of radical experimentation with everyday materials as well as the engagement with spatial conditions and the influence of light. The exhibition Mindset Los Angeles – Works from the Schürmann Collection (June 27 – Nov. 8, 2026), which not only presents the large-scale installation The Great Sea Battles of Wilhelm Schürmann (1994–1995) by Jason Rhoades but also brings together other works by artists who engage with Gehry’s work and the early Los Angeles art scene.
