Tokyo Station Gallery Tokyo
Tokyo Station Gallery was established in 1988 in part of Tokyo Central Station, based on the idea that a station could offer people a chance to experience the arts and cultures, rather than merely serving as a transportation hub. The magnificent red-brick facade and the interior walls of the station, originally built in 1914, make an historical and architectural statement while creating a pleasant ambiance for both visitors and works of art.
Tokyo Station Gallery organized 105 exhibitions until its temporary closing in 2006. More than 2.3 million visitors over the last 18 years have enjoyed exhibitions spanning the entire art world, including paintings, sculptures, graphic art, and architectural design.
In the autumn 2012, after the completion of a 5-year restoration project for the preservation of Tokyo Station, we finally made a new start as more advanced museum with up-to-date facilities and ideas.
Tokyo Station, a starting point for Japanese transportation, has been witness to a turbulent period of Japanese history and was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2003. We are aware of the importance of this historical station, and work to promote the development of local culture surrounding railways. We continue to send a message through art exhibitions of high quality.
