Art and architecture.
With the exhibition "Art and Architecture. Perspectives from NRW," the Museum of Building Culture NRW is bringing art and architecture back into the public eye after a long period of neglect. It will be shown from June 13 to August 22, 2025, in the arcade of the Gelsenkirchen Science Park. The exhibition opens on Saturday, June 14, 2025, with an exhibition talk at 2 p.m. The exhibition is part of the event "Transformation as a Task. 25 Years of Building Culture NRW" on June 13 and 14, 2025.
In art and architecture projects, artists explore the time, place, space, and function of architecture. Their works can surprise, disturb, and create identity. They reflect social questions and encourage new perspectives on architecture. In this way, buildings come to life, unique places emerge—art and architecture converge in everyday life.
Thirty objects from North Rhine-Westphalia have been selected as examples for this exhibition. Among them are Friedrich Gräsel's "Abluftskulpturen" (Exhaust Air Sculptures) in front of the former Westdeutsche Landesbank in Münster (architecture: Harald Deilmann), Henry Moore's "Large Two Forms" in front of the former Federal Chancellery in Bonn (architecture: Planungsgruppe Stieldorf), and Selma Gültoprak's "Earth Is Blue" at the Goethe-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf (renovation: RKW Architektur+).
Photos, videos, and texts provide insight into the diversity of this special art form: different genres, materials, and dimensions, but above all, different forms of creation and reception. More than an assessment of artistic quality, this exhibition aims to demonstrate the added value that art can create for the building and its users, but also to point out limitations and challenges.
Opening & Exhibition Talk: June 14, 2025, 2 p.m.
