As part of the “Research Field” seminar format, eighteen architecture students from RWTH Aachen dedicated themselves to Scharoun’s highly complex interior compositions. Under the direction of Hendrik Reinhold and Christian Raabe, seven icons of German post-war architecture were measured and documented. These include important Berlin buildings such as the Philharmonie and the Berlin State Library, Haus Potsdamer Straße, which the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) will be repairing from the ground up in the coming years.
At the end of the seminar, large-format cut models were created from birch wood, the cut edges of which follow exemplary spatial paths. The focus should not be on depicting the building shells, but rather on examining the special features of selected spatial sequences, which are revealed in the truest sense of the word. Many of Hans Scharoun's buildings, who conceived architecture from the inner space like few other architects, had a formative character - also for the cityscape of Berlin.
