The architecture of Otto Apel and ABB, the studio Apel founded in 1961 together with Hannsgeorg Beckert and Gilbert Becker defines Frankfurt today. The roughly 40 buildings they realized here include the municipal theater and opera, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the Hotel Intercontinental, and the Dresdner and Deutsche Bank high-rises. Maintenance hangar V at Frankfurt Airport, the Nordwestzentrum mall, which was internationally acclaimed in its day, and Otto Apel’s residential and office building at Berliner Strasse 27 were also outstanding projects.
The DAM has included the archive of ABB in its collection. The exhibition showcases projects in Frankfurt from the 1950ies to the 1970ies in over 500 historical photographs by Ulfert Beckert, the brother of the architect Hannsgeorg Beckert. Those are complemented with photographs by the artist Eike Laeuen.
