Studio Mumbai was founded in 2005 by Bijoy Jain as a cooperative devoted both to architectural proposals and to design. Born in Mumbai, Jain studied architecture in the USA and subsequently worked for Richard Meier in Los Angeles and later in London. The Studio Mumbai workshop is located in Alibag, what is still in part a rural district in the south west of the Indian metropolis. Working in a large shaded courtyard, the architects and artisans collaborate on their projects down to the final details. American architect Samuel Barclay, carpenter Jivaram Sutar, Pandurang Malekar (stonemason) and Bhaskar Raut (stonemason and carpenter) constitute the concept development team. Modern design, prime materials and traditional artisanship enter into a natural dialog with the surroundings in Studio Mumbai’s projects, which have a striking sensual presence.
