With the appointments of Ernst May as the Head of Frankfurt’s Planning Department and of Martin Elsaesser as the Director of Frankfurt’s Building Department, between 1925 and 1930 the city transformed into a hotspot of the avant-garde’s “New Building” movement, which captivated the entire European continent. At the center of this trend was the endeavor to build social housing. In 2008 Frankfurt photo artist Matthias Matzak began to record the remains of this legacy with his camera. He opted for a subjective approach to the architecture, thus painting a vivid portrait that far extends the scope of a documentary: “In my pictures I want to show the personality of a building, not just its shell.”
