Boltshauser Architects

The Principle of Reduction

Kloster Ingenbohl

Opening hours
Mon – Fri 9 am –12 am / 2 pm –7 pm Sat – Sun 9 am –12 am / 2 pm –5 pm

From April 17 to September 20, 2026, the Ingenbohl Monastery will host an exhibition by Boltshauser Architekten on the diverse and innovative use of clay in their architecture. On display are projects and models, prototypes of clay elements, and material samples, as well as sketches by Roger Boltshauser. Paintings and photographs by well-known artists such as Daniel Schwartz, Heidi Bucher, Arnulf Rainer, Sandro Livio Straube, Luca Ferrario, Niklas Eschenmoser, and Philip Heckhausen complement the architectural perspective.

Since the late 1990s, Boltshauser Architekten has been advocating for the establishment of clay as a local and climate-neutral building material; the firm has realized a wide variety of buildings using this material and has pioneered innovative applications. The result is a body of work that speaks a resilient language and, through a deliberate reduction of means, challenges conventional approaches.
Today, they are also exploring the potential of clay in combination with other building materials, thereby promoting its wider use. At Roger Boltshauser’s chair at ETH Zurich, practical experience is backed by scientific research, and research findings are incorporated back into the buildings. This feedback loop is crucial for strengthening confidence in clay and establishing it as a contemporary building material.

For Boltshauser Architekten, the central question is always how this gives rise to architecture that is enduring. After all, durability is the most important factor in sustainability—beauty, atmosphere, and the resulting appreciation of the users are what ensure it.

Opening: April 24, 2026, 6:00 p.m.

Lecture by Roger Boltshauser: August 20, 2026, 6:00 p.m.
