In Holz denken / Misliti v lesu / Thinking in Wood
On Wednesday, November 11, 2026, Architektur Haus Kärnten, in collaboration with OHS–Open House Slovenia / aFRONT- Institute for spatial innovation, invites you to the opening of the exhibition “In Holz denken / Misliti v lesu / Thinking in Wood.” In the spirit of bilateral cooperation between Carinthia | Koroška and Slovenia | Slovenija, the exhibition presents contemporary approaches to Slovenian (wooden) architecture.
Under the title “In Holz denken / Misliti v lesu / Thinking in Wood,” the exhibition offers insight into the diversity and quality of contemporary Slovenian architecture. The focus is on wood as a material, a form of expression, and a cultural resource—and on the question of what role this renewable building material can play in contemporary architecture.
The selected projects showcase different architectural typologies and highlight how closely materiality, landscape, craftsmanship, and contemporary building are intertwined in Slovenian architecture.
Panel Discussion at the Exhibition Opening
“Wood without borders”
To mark the opening of the exhibition, we invite you to an international panel discussion. Panelists from Slovenia | Slovenija and Carinthia | Koroška will discuss current developments in architecture, the significance of timber construction, and the potential for cross-border collaboration. Under the title “Wood Without Borders,” wood serves as the starting point for a conversation about architecture, regional identity, and shared visions for the future. The panel will provide insights into the development of contemporary Slovenian timber architecture and open up new perspectives on building with wood within our shared cultural space.
The opening ceremony will feature, among other things, a welcome address by Mag. Leon Korosec, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development, Labor, and Sports of the Republic of Slovenia. In the subsequent panel discussion, architect Aleksander Ostan from Slovenia will lead the cross-border professional exchange.
The discussion will focus on architecture, timber construction, and innovative building culture in the context of the dialogue between Slovenia and Austria. On the Slovenian side, architects Maruša Zorec (Arrea arhitektura) and Špela Videčnik (OFIS arhitekti), master carpenter Domen Ovsenik (Mizarstvo Ovsenik), and Barbara Šubic, managing director of M Sora Fensterarchitektur, will contribute their professional perspectives. Austria is represented by Markus Lackner, a structural engineer and multi-award-winning timber construction expert, as well as architect Markus Klaura, chairman of the board of Architektur Haus Kärnten and a timber construction expert.
The event provides a space for professional exchange, new ideas, and personal encounters. It connects people and ideas across borders and opens up new perspectives on contemporary architecture and a forward-looking building culture within the shared European living space.
35 (Construction) Projects – Diverse Perspectives
The exhibition presents 35 selected projects of contemporary Slovenian timber architecture, offering a multifaceted look at the possibilities of timber construction. The selection encompasses residential and hospitality projects, public developments, commercial and industrial facilities, as well as infrastructure projects.
Architecture and (Building) Culture Know No Borders
Through this bilateral cooperation, Architektur Haus Kärnten and OHS–Open House Slovenia / aFRONT – Institute for Spatial Innovation are fostering cultural and professional exchange between two neighboring (architectural) regions. We look forward to an evening of dialogue between Carinthia (Kärnten | Koroška) and Slovenia (Slowenien | Slovenija) – with timber as a shared starting point and contemporary architecture as a connecting element.
