A public administrative establishment under the joint supervision of the Ministries of Culture and Higher Education, Research and Innovation, ENSASE is one of the 20 national schools of architecture in France. Installed since its creation (1971) in a former ribbon factory, overlooking Place Jacquard in the heart of the city, ENSASE is in direct contact with social and urban life. This former textile recipe merchant's building which belonged to the Louison family was built between 1857 and 1864.

The City of Saint-Étienne bought the original building in 1971 to install the municipal school of architecture there, transformed by decree into a Pedagogical Unit of Architecture on July 24, 1972 then in the School of Architecture in 1984. In 2005, ENSASE was the subject of an extension renovation project led by the architect François Bouchaudy, the main challenge of which was to give this building complex an architectural identity consistent with the history of the place and its function. of architecture school. In 2013, work enabled ENSASE, an establishment open to the public subject to the rules of accessibility for people with disabilities, to comply with law no. 2005-102 of February 11, 2005 for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship of people with disabilities.
