“The monument makes us realise that we are separated from the past. At the same time, it reminds us that it is our task to establish a relationship with history.
That is why it is precisely building in the existing fabric that leads me on the search for an architecture that continues history. Beyond reconstruction and repair. This search for the new, which would not be possible or conceivable without the old, is what I call building on.”
Max Dudler

Together with the Forum Baukultur OWL, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld presents an exhibition with models and photographs of selected projects by the architect Max Dudler.
In his work, Max Dudler repeatedly deals intensively with the subject of continuing to build cultural monuments. Two of his award-winning buildings have been standing in Bielefeld since 2014, as unequal twins they are part of an architectural project.
The visitor centre for the Sparrenburg Castle and the information point for the Johannisberg relate the cultural monument to the landscape monument.
Max Dudler’s architecture is not a reconstruction of a specific state, but rather fits into the changeful history of the site as a contemporary layer. In doing so, the architecture transfers the expression of the existing substance into a contemporary language.
