attention to detail
plaster casts of the Basel Minster
The cathedral is home to a wealth of beautiful, strange or bizarrely designed sandstone components. Inaccessible, poorly lit or far away, the vivid details often elude the viewer. Since its inception, the Basel cathedral workshop has regularly made casts. They are kept so that if they are lost due to weathering or damage, they can be used as a template for the necessary repairs. Selected plaster objects are being shown in the exhibition, some for the first time. The oldest cast on display dates from the 1840s. They enable a direct encounter at eye level and bring to life the medieval sculptors' love of detail.
