The New Stuttgart
"The New Stuttgart" is the fourth and final installment in the series "Stuttgart's History in 100 Objects," which, with four special exhibitions, conveys Stuttgart's complete history as a grand journey through time, from prehistoric times to the present day. Using 25 special objects and historical photographs, the special exhibition guides visitors through the city's defining events and upheavals between 1918 and 2010 – from the November Revolution to the protests surrounding Stuttgart 21.
The title "The New Stuttgart" refers to a self-image that shaped the city, particularly in the 1920s – as a place of democratic, architectural, and educational reform. At the same time, the exhibition illuminates ruptures and contradictions: from the Nazi era and colonial entanglements to migration, protest, and diversity in the present.
At its core are 25 objects, which, like the previous exhibition section, "City of Kings," predominantly come from the StadtPalais collection. Each of the 25 objects is complemented by a historical photograph, which is spatialized with the help of AI and extended to the floor. This creates walk-in visual spaces that tell of moments of collective experience, political decisions, technical innovations, and personal memories.
These visual spaces are accompanied by the unique 3D audio system USOMO, which recognizes the visitor's position and activates sounds, voices, and stories accordingly. This creates three-dimensional auditory worlds that can be experienced interactively. Original recordings, staged conversations, and atmospheric sounds bring to life the concept of the "Stuttgart Kitchen" at the Werkbund Exhibition of 1927 or the first ascent of Mount Everest with a Kodak Retina 118, lead to the former telephone booth of Stuttgart City Hall, or into the heart of the protests against Stuttgart 21. In "The New Stuttgart" history is brought to life – at every turn.
Opening: October 1, 2025, 7 p.m.
