The construction sector is both one of the largest causes of CO2 emissions and the largest consumer of mineral raw materials. Building in its current form therefore contributes significantly to global warming and is causally responsible for a problem of the rapidly dwindling availability of resources, which has so far hardly been noticed by society. Climate-neutral, resource-saving construction using renewable raw materials such as wood, clay and straw offers a solution. However, these have neither been extensively applied nor researched in recent decades, so fundamental questions remain regarding their potential and their applicability.

The exhibition “SHAPING TOMORROW – rethinking clay and wood. Research and teaching on the rise” offers insights into teaching and research activities in the architecture courses at the HTWK Leipzig. Pavilion designs by master's students for the Saxon State Winery Schloss Wackerbarth will be presented. The seminar focused fundamentally on the use of clay and wood as building materials as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional materials. In a seminar with close content and a conceptually scientific orientation and with technical support from the FLEX research group, the students developed digital concepts for rammed earth applications in non-orthogonal-plane formwork in parallel to the pavilion designs. In a third area, the exhibition presents projects from the FLEX research group at the interface of digital planning and production - primarily in wood - using models, plans and animations.
