Democratic Design
With Democratic Design – Space for Cooperation, Collaboration, and Compromise, Aedes explores how architecture, planning processes, and public spaces can foster democratic engagement and social cohesion – both more urgent than ever in times of profound social uncertainty. The program includes an exhibition, four Lab Talks, and a catalog featuring contributions from practitioners in Berlin, Germany, and across Europe, selected through an open call in collaboration with European architecture centers.
Democratic Design focuses on democratic planning processes and the spaces they generate. It presents projects that amplify marginalized voices, promote participation, and inspire collective visions of the future. Dialogue and exchange are essential prerequisites for democracy. They foster the ability to accept different viewpoints and compromise – fundamental elements of any democratic culture. Democratic Design – Space for Cooperation, Collaboration, and Compromise is curated by the Aedes team and presented at Aedes in Berlin.
Our democracy is currently facing difficult times. Many people have lost faith in civic engagement and are withdrawing into protest or resignation. Others desire greater participation, but they are denied access on an equal footing.
