DE SINGEL is a welcoming arts house, a meeting place for art without borders in a changing world. In a unique building on a multifaceted arts site, DE SINGEL connects communities with artists and art practices across the globe. Building on a fascinating artistic past, DE SINGEL invites a broad audience to experience music, theatre, dance and architecture in all their variety and to discover fresh, contemporary perspectives.

Art without borders
DE SINGEL is radically diverse, embraces differences and builds bridges. Between art and society. Between the international and the local. Between artists. Between art disciplines and genres. Between communities and cultures. Between dominant ways of thinking and under-represented alternatives. Between the canon and innovation. Between tradition and experimentation. Between new names and established figures. Between the present and the past. Between production and presentation. Between the fields of work and education.

Welcoming, generous and progressive
DE SINGEL is vibrant, generous and progressive. An open house in the city where we truly celebrate art and artists. Where we treat each other, the environment and our surroundings with consideration. Where the desire to attract a large and diverse audience goes hand in hand with adventure and innovation. Where we engage with the different facets that make up a society through numerous alliances with the education sector, a plethora of clubs and societies and the business world. Where thresholds are low, but the bar is set high.

Different perspectives
DE SINGEL challenges you to look at things differently. To ask questions. To expand your comfort zones. To look critically at conventional ways of thinking. To challenge how you think, feel and act. To put yourself in someone else’s shoes and consider fresh perspectives. To be open to a different view of the world.

The Flemish Government established DE SINGEL, owns the building complex, is the core provider of subsidies, and conferred on it the statute of Art Institution.
As an open house that builds bridges between art and society, DE SINGEL is aware of its societal role in the public debate. This mission and vision is the foundation of our positioning in society, but it remains a work in progress. DE SINGEL continues to work on a constructive approach in which we translate social and cultural dynamics into our day-to-day operations. We believe that criticism is a core driver of change and welcome every open debate about the way we work.
